Location: Nashville, TN
This past week, I visited two ethical brands based in Nashville – FASHIONABLE and Nisolo. Nashville’s fashion scene is growing rapidly and now boasts the highest concentration of fashion companies per capita after New York and Los Angeles. It is also becoming a hub for ethical fashion brands. According to FASHIONABLE’s marketing director, Marisa, Nashville has a vibrant creative culture with photographers, musicians, and artists which makes it a natural fit for fashion.
I started with a visit to FASHIONABLE’s flagship store in the Stocking 51 development. The concept of FASHIONABLE began in 2010 when founders Rachel and Barrett Ward (while living in Ethiopia) saw firsthand the challenges that women in poverty face. They wanted to provide an opportunity for the women to earn a living without the dependency commonly associated with charity. Today, FASHIONABLE uses an artisan empowerment model and stands by their ideals of creating job opportunities for those who need it most.
Marisa gave me a behind the scenes look at their day to day operations and infrastructure. I have been in the market for some new jeans and was thrilled to have a chance to try on their new line of denim. This black pair was my favorite – you’ll be seeing them a lot in future blog posts.
After a coffee break at Barista Parlor, I headed over to Nisolo in the Germantown area. Nisolo’s motto is: intentionally designed, ethically made, fairly priced. Their vision is to restore fashion to what it once was: focus on the artist, production, planet, and consumer. To learn more about their process, I recommend watching this video. What I love about the brand is the quality and craftsmanship of their designs. I tried on these and these, but am patiently waiting for this style to be available. Alexandra (marketing director) was modeling these while I was in the store, and they are the perfect fall/winter boot.
